Two years ago Google started to promote the idea of a safer web by getting more if not all websites to use HTTPS instead of HTTP.
While in the early days it was expensive and cumbersome to use HTTPS this is not the case anymore.
The video
“Mythbusting HTTPS” from June, 2016 explains why there are more benefits than drawbacks by switching your site entirely to HTTPS.
Especially non-commercial projects were shied away by the cost of certificates which usually starts at 60-70 $ annually and is much higher for multi-domain and wildcard SSL certificates. Thanks to a non-profit organisation one can get certificates for free nowadays. However, some technical expertise is required to handle the installation process which should be automated.

In context with the upcoming
EU-General Data Protection Regulation (EU-GDPR) the use of HTTPS is highly recommended from a legal standpoint of view.
